On the Friday afternoon drive home, I’m relieved the weekend has finally arrived. Sleeping in, afternoons at the pool and…the looming pile of clothes on the laundry room floor! We walk along an empty beach yet I don’t feel my feet touching the sand. God laid his hand on my shoulder. I felt a powerful Love that brought tears to my eyes. So overwhelming, indescribable in any manner or words known to man. It feels as if I’m floating in God’s arms and I feel safe and secure for the first time in my life.
When I turn to look at him I am somewhat blinded by this amazing light. A light different then any light I have seen on this earth. Suddenly all my wonders become so clear to me, so simple that I never saw them, all the while they were with me, right in front of me. No, not in front of me, or beside me, but within me. I had lived in the material world for so long that I had truly lost site of who I was and why I was here. At last my purpose was clear to me and I could hear the angels singing from the gates of heaven. My heart rejoiced and I can not describe the freedom I was basking in or the pleasure I was feeling knowing that God loved me so much. It became so clear to me how tiny my earthly concerns had been. My life would no longer be lived in the earthly plain where guilt and envy dwelled. I would never again worry about anything, including money, food, health, or employment. These were all things that will be left behind when my journey here was over and I went to dwell in the house of the Lord. I knew that I would be provided for and I could now set my intentions on God’s will for me.
I walk this earth to give hope to those in despair, to give faith to those who see no future, and love to all of God’s children unconditionally. Through my trials and tribulations came a powerful message from God through me. I will lead by example with a loving soul and a forgiving heart. I will not indulge prejudice but treat all my brothers and sisters as equals, because we are all one and the same in the eyes of our Lord.
As God wishes I will breach the boundaries of this worlds many religions, for there is one God and he chooses no favorites, with the exception of those who do his work and follow his word. To those they shall have favor from our Lord and from all men. They are not above any other man; only in their testimonies do they separate them selves as disciples of the lord, messengers and leaders by example.
Before the lord left me he comforted me. He promised me that His spirit will guide me and be with me for eternity. “You will walk this earth with angels at your side. All who see you will know that you have the hand of God upon you”. “Do not fear, for you as a believer have opened the gates of heaven to all whom you love, those with you now and those that now reside in peace in the house of your Lord”. I was so rejoiced and began to walk on air. “I love you so much God, Thank you!” And once again God laid his hands on me and his voice spoke through my ears to the depths of my soul. “I love you my son and I am very proud of you”. My body was filled with this beautiful spirit that consumed my every being. The spirit was loving and nurturing and the purest of pure. I was as a newborn coming into this world cleansed and without sin. I felt compassion, every breath of air I took was full of direction and purpose.
The Lord left my side yet I could still feel him resting inside of me. What an honor to serve such a loving Father. It was time to spread God’s love and compassion with those who were suffering spiritually. What a wonderful journey lies ahead. What a wonderful friend to travel with. Yes, I am truly blessed! Start with LIMIT Texas Hold ‘Em
Both limit and no-limit Texas Hold ‘Em are wonderful games. Each game provides unique opportunities in nearly every single hand and subtle complexities that can take more than a lifetime to master. However, each game emphasizes different skill sets in order to master it. Limit Texas Hold ‘Em is both an art and a science. However, the structured betting emphasizes the science aspect of the game. Likewise, no-limit Texas Hold ‘Em is also both an art and a science, but the absence of structured betting emphasizes the art aspect of the game. Ultimately, I believe good poker players should excel at both versions of the game (as well as many other variations of poker), but I think that beginning players should initially focus on limit Texas Hold ‘Em before moving on to no-limit.
Despite this recommendation, please do not mistake limit Texas Hold ‘Em as an easier game than no-limit. The skill required to win an additional bet (or more likely save an additional bet) in a hand is extremely high and your profits from limit Hold ‘Em come from those extra bets.
I make this recommendation for a number of reasons. One, limit Texas Hold ‘Em forces beginning players to learn all of the basics of Texas Hold ‘Em such as starting hand requirements, pot odds, and implied odds. Many of these same concepts are less critical in no-limit Hold ‘Em (as I am sure many of you have seen on TV). However, please do NOT fool yourself. These same players you see on TV raising ten-two unsuited have already mastered the underlying fundamentals (starting hand requirements, reading the texture of the flop, pot/implied odds, basic strategy).
Two, since limit Hold ‘Em is more of a science, it lends itself to more rules that beginners can rely on. As you progress in your limit career, you will uncover more and more exceptions to these rules. However, reliance on rules such as starting hand requirements and pot/implied odds can transform a beginning limit player from a significant loser to a winner. Please note, in short-handed limit games the rules have less significance so please stick to 9 to 11 man, limit Hold ‘Em while learning.
Three, expert players have a much greater advantage over beginning players in no-limit than they do in limit. There are many situations in limit where both the better and the caller are playing correct strategy because of pot odds. In no-limit, this is less likely and usually 1 of the players is making a mistake and more often than not it is the beginning player, not the expert player. Since beginning players are at less of a disadvantage in limit, in only makes sense to transform yourself from a beginning player to an intermediate player at limit Hold ‘Em.
So begin your ascent now. Learn the game! Don’t let your opponents fool you into thinking playing by the book is ignorant. Remember, the majority of your opponents are long-term losers! For starters, I would recommend the Texas Help ‘Em guide (available at www.TexasHelpEm.com) since it consolidates what you need to know and presents it in a manner that is practical to reference by beginning players while actually playing online. It is my experience that most people cannot sit and read a traditional poker text without falling asleep! If you decide the Texas Help ‘Em guide is not right for you, I still strongly recommend that you find the basic limit strategy reading that is.
Once you improve to the point where you have mastered starting hand requirements, pot/implied odds, reading the texture of the board/flop, pot/implied odds, and basic strategy, and are profitable (which you will know because you will record all of your winnings and losses per session, right???), you then have several options available.
Move Up in Stakes
This is how to progress from a low-limit player to a mid-limit player to a fill-in-the-blank here. It is important to never go bankrupt. Never play at stakes that jeopardize your bankroll. It is also important to note that winning strategy often changes at mid-level and higher stakes so I would not recommend moving up too high until after you have read and understand several advanced limit Hold ‘Em books.
Play 6-Man Limit Hold ‘Em
6-man Limit Hold ‘Em provides for a much faster, and often more entertaining game. However, please be warned that as mentioned earlier, the skill set required for short-handed games varies greatly from that of 9-11 man games. Beginning players simply do NOT do well in short-handed games so avoid these games until you are at least an intermediate level player and have read several books on advanced limit Hold ‘Em strategies.
Play No-Limit Hold ‘Em
Now that you have mastered the basic (and essential) fundamentals Hold ‘Em (starting hand requirements, reading the texture of the board, pot/implied odds, basic strategy), you are in good position to begin learning no-limit Hold ‘Em. As I recommend with limit Hold ‘Em, I would encourage you to pick-up a text on no-limit Texas Hold ‘Em for beginners. I must caution you in advance that many of the recommendations will be that it depends on what you think he has, what you think he thinks you have, on what you think he thinks you think he has…Get it? Rules do not apply as much to no-limit which makes it a more difficult game to teach in a book so please be cautious.

Previously I’ve written about tournament end games, and about how the best defense can be a good offense. In the “good offense” article, I wrote about an event during the Russian Revolution where a band of 125 anarchist cavalry soldiers were surrounded by twenty times as many communist opponents. The 125 attacked and routed their enemy.
Let’s examine that a little closer. Suppose you were one of the anarchists. You would know that the communists were completely treacherous, brutal and untrustable. So what would you do? Surrender sheepishly? Simply fall on your sword and die? Not much life expectancy in those choices.

The most sensible course of action would be to attack, and fight ferociously for your life. Your chances of winning, and surviving, would be small, but they would be greater than zero. Even one in a million is better than zero in a million.
In this way, being one of the 125 attacking anarchists would be pretty easy. You just have to fight with everything you have, with no illusions about your dim hopes. You might die, but taking some of the people wanting to kill you with you would have some appeal in itself.
But now put yourself in the shoes of a communist soldier. As one of 2500 men surrounding a force 1/20th the size of your own, you’d have to feel pretty good. But now imagine those 125 doomed anarchists charging straight at you!! All of sudden you don’t feel so secure. One hundred twenty-five desperate men willing to do anything, no matter how brutal, to try and survive are now hurling themselves directly at you. You may think that your group of 2500 will still prevail, but do you want to be one of the 80 or 120 or 350 of your group that dies in the battle to kill the 125?
In the historical battle, the 125 sent the 2500 into headlong retreat. Even though the 125 were greatly outnumbered, there were still enough of them to inflict much mortal harm on the specific individuals who directly tried to kill them.
The poker tournament lesson here is that you must not go quietly into the night. If you are going to lose, go down fighting. And then also, even when it looks like you will lose, it is possible that you still might win. That means that you should not give up, but more than that, it is vital that you fight your battles when you are still a threat. Fight while you can still hurt your opponent. If you are short stack at a final table, every one of your opponents might think you will be the next to be eliminated, but that doesn’t mean they will want to put themselves at risk to eliminate you. They don’t want to be one of the 80 or 120 or 350 to die just to kill you.

There are several aspects to this. First, don’t blind yourself down to a pathetic stack, like a single chip. Somebody with one chip will never scare anybody. You want to be seen as 125 desperate, raging anarchists, not a one chip cupcake. Hurl yourself into battle while you still can wreak havoc like 125 anarchists.
When it gets down to head-up this concept doesn’t really exist, but when you have at least two opponents make it so your opponents know that killing you may hurt or wound them significantly. Be aggressive, exude recklessness even, and do it while you still can damage your opponents. If you are three-handed, and they both have 100 chips while you have thirty chips, neither of your opponents will be anxious to play pots with you if you are aggressively attacking. But if you only have five chips, you won’t scare either at all. Your game boils down to simply having to turn over the best hand time and again. Better to attack and get your opponents to retreat. Make them scared of you.
Of course this means that you will lose earlier sometimes, but I’m not advocating a reckless style of play overall. I’m just saying that you should make your “final” stand sooner than most players tend to. Make it so your final, desperate battle for survival is even less appealing to your opponents than it is to you.
They may get you, but make sure it is after a fight.
